What the Eye Holds explores the gaze and its impossible neutrality.
The way we look is always shaped by what we have lived through, by what we carry within ourselves, sometimes without even knowing it. There are layers within the gaze in which the eyes are not the only actors: memory, recollection, everything that has marked, moved, or passed through us.
The works brought together here explore the space between what is shown and what is felt. Some images feel close, almost silent. Others linger on ordinary details : a gesture, a presence, a trace that suddenly take on another weight when the gaze slows down. And then there are works that speak to us, that affect us without us fully knowing why, because they echo... somewhere within us.
Each artist arrives with their own story. Their origins, their displacements, their tensions, their attachments. For some, this takes on a political dimension. For others, it is quieter, more deeply buried, tied to memory, sensation, or a way of being in the world. Nothing here is entirely fixed. Everything overlaps and intertwines. What unfolds here is not only what is being shown, but also what each person brings into it.
Looking then becomes a fragile, almost intimate experience something that is built between the image and the person observing it.
What the Eye Holds may be about precisely that : what we carry within ourselves without always knowing how to name it. What the eye captures, but what the body holds onto differently.

What the eye holds se plonge dans le regard et son impossible neutralité.
En effet, le regard se veut toujours chargé de ce que l’on a vécu, de ce que l’on garde en soi, parfois sans le savoir. Il y a des couches dans ce regard, dont les yeux ne sont pas les seuls acteurs: la mémoire, les souvenirs, avec ce qui nous a marqué, déplacé ou traversé.
Les œuvres réunies ici explorent cet espace entre ce qui est montré et ce qui est ressenti. Certaines images sont proches, presque silencieuses. D’autres s’attardent sur des détails ordinaires : un geste, une présence, une trace qui prennent soudain un autre poids lorsque le regard ralentit. Et puis il y en a qui nous parlent, qui touchent sans que l’on sache forcément pourquoi, parce que ça fait écho...quelque part en nous.
Chaque artiste arrive avec son histoire. Avec ses origines, ses déplacements, ses tensions, ses attachements. Pour certain·es, cela passe par quelque chose de politique. Pour d’autres, c’est plus discret, plus enfoui, lié à une mémoire, à une sensation, à une manière d’être au monde. Rien n’y est complètement figé.Tout se mélange. Ce qui se joue ici, ce n’est pas seulement ce qui est montré, mais ce que chacun y dépose.
Regarder devient alors une expérience fragile, presque intime. Quelque chose qui se construit entre l’image et celui ou celle qui la regarde.
What the Eye Holds, c’est peut-être ça : ce que l’on garde en soi sans toujours savoir le nommer. Ce que l’œil capte, mais que le corps, lui, retient autrement.
